Saint Meinrad alumnus Most Rev. Peter A. Libasci was
named the new bishop of the Diocese of Manchester, NH, by Pope Benedict XVI on
September 19. He attended Saint Meinrad School of Theology from
1973-77.
Bishop-designate Libasci, 59, was ordained as a bishop
on June 1, 2007, for the Diocese of Rockville Centre, NY, where he served as
auxiliary bishop. He has been serving in the Rockville
Centre diocese since his ordination as a priest in
1978.
During his time as auxiliary bishop, he has assisted
Bishop William Murphy in the leadership of the 1.4 million Catholics on Long
Island and served as the bishop’s representative for the Eastern Vicariate
(SuffolkCounty).
Bishop Libasci graduated with a Master of Divinity
degree from Saint Meinrad School of Theology. He earned a bachelor’s degree in
philosophy from St.
John’s University. He is a native of Middle Village, NY.
Bishop Libasci is bi-ritual and celebrates the Divine
Liturgy in the Byzantine Ruthenian Catholic Church.
Installation has been set for December 8. He will
succeed Bishop John B. McCormack, whose resignation at age 76 was accepted by
Pope Benedict.
