Brother Borgia (Carmelo Arthur) Brigandi died at the age of 74 in hospice care in Beverly, MA. Father David Curran, CICM, Xaverian House Chaplain, celebrated the Mass of the Resurrection in the chapel at St. John’s Preparatory School in Danvers, MA. Internment followed at the Brothers’ Cemetery there.Born on February 13, 1931 in Brighton, MA, Arthur Brigandi graduated from Boys Catholic High School in Malden, MA in 1949. He then entered the Sacred Heart Novitiate of the Xaverian Brothers at Fort Monroe, VA, and, on March 19, 1950 received the religious habit and took the name Borgia in religion. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree fromCatholic University in 1955 and his Master’s degree in 1968 from the same university. He did additional graduate study at Bellarmine College.Brother Borgia started teaching at the Working Boys Home in Newton Highlands, MA. in 1955. In 1958, he began a period of 39 years of teaching in Kentucky, 16 at Flaget and, starting in 1974, 21 more at St. Xavier High School. In 1997, he returned to Massachusetts to teach at St. John’s Preparatory School for two years before retiring.In his eulogy for Brother Borgia, Brother James Kelly called him “a superb classroom teacher and a man with a warm heart for the welfare of his students. Brother James also pointed out that Brother Borgia often paid expenses for students whose families were struggling financially. Over the years he was also a very successful track coach, and became a highly regarded track meet official in Kentucky. Not surprisingly, in his homily Father Curran, who knew Brother Borgia in retirement, spoke about a quiet, soft-spoken, gentle man, who “G╟¬evangelized in a special way during his time of sickness by reaching out to others, always with a smile on his lips and a deep smile in his eyes.
