Charles Mattingly, 85, died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2007, in Antioch.He was born June 19, 1922, in Indianapolis to the late Thomas and Henrietta (Schnell) Mattingly. Also preceding him in death was his wife, Patricia Wess and a daughter, Michele Mattingly.He lived in Cannelton from 1958-70. He attended Saint Meinrad Seminary and after military service, graduated cum laude from the University of Notre Dame with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. He also attended Lane Drafting College in Indianapolis.During World War II, he served with the 12th Armored Division, 17th Armored Infantry and was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Combat Medic Badge.He served as editor of Child and Family Magazine from 1955-60; was the first lay editor of Marriage Magazine from 1960-65 and was editor for several magazines with Hitchcock Publishing from 1965-73. He retired in 1988 as an investigator for the U.S. Department of Labor. He enjoyed reading, controversial scientific theories, limericks, haiku, bad puns, drawing, painting and garden design.Surviving are four daughters, Lucy and Judith Mattingly of San Francisco and Ann Mattingly and Cara Ratliff of Nashville, Tenn.; a brother, the Reverend Basil Mattingly OSB; two grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Michael Ratliff; nieces and nephews and his former wife, Janet Wells.Information obtained from the Perry County News on 10/18/2007.
