Fr. Ivo Edward Cecil was 85 and died at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown.Born March 11, 1926, in Nelson County, Fr. Cecil attended Bethlehem Academy and St. Joe Prep, where he was named to the Hall of Fame. He was a World War II Navy veteran, a Kentucky Colonel, a member of the Knights of Columbus and was ordained a Catholic priest May 8, 1954. He was a 1975 graduate of Spalding College and received a Masters of Divinity from Saint Meinrad School of Theology in 1978. His assignments included St. Gregory, St. Thomas More, Cathedral of the Assumption, St. Raphael, Most Blessed Sacrament, Immaculate Conception in LaGrange, Kentucky State Reformatory and the Kentucky Corrections Institution for Women, St. Christopher in Radcliff, St. Augustine in Lebanon, St. Aloysius in Shepherdsville, St. Benedict in Lebanon Junction and St. Clare in Colesburg.He was preceded in death by his parents, Lavielle and Mary Elizabeth Thompson Cecil; and three brothers, Henry Cecil, Francis Lavielle Cecil and Sam Kennett Cecil. Survivors include two brothers, Joe Cecil of South Bend, Ind., and George Cecil of Bardstown; two sisters, Theresa Cecil of Nazareth and Peggy (Clyde) Stanley of Louisville; a devoted caregiver, housekeeper and longtime friend, Patsy Lyon of Loretto; and several nieces and nephews.A Mass of Christian burial is at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral in Bardstown with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery. The Most Reverend Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D., will be the celebrant.Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, at Mann and Greenwell Funeral Home in Bardstown and continues at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.Memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Charities of Louisville, 2911 S. 4th.
