Fr John Howren Atlanta GA Obituary – It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the Archdiocese of Atlanta and the wider Catholic community announce the passing of Very Rev. John T. Howren, V.F., lovingly known as Father John. Born on September 12, 1964, Father John entered eternal rest on the morning of January 12, 2026, at 8:08 a.m., having faithfully answered God’s call throughout his life and ministry.

His passing marks a moment of deep mourning for parishioners, clergy, family, and all who were blessed to know him—not only as a priest, but as a shepherd, teacher, and compassionate presence rooted in Christ’s love.

A Life Dedicated to God and His People

Ordained to the priesthood on June 1, 1996, Father John devoted nearly thirty years of his life to serving God and His Church. From the moment of his ordination, he embraced his vocation with unwavering faith, humility, and compassion, offering his life entirely in service to others.

Father John’s priesthood was defined by a deep sense of pastoral care. He walked alongside his parishioners in moments of joy and sorrow, offering guidance, encouragement, and hope rooted in the Gospel. His ministry reflected a sincere commitment to living out Christ’s love in both word and action.

Beloved Pastor of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Since the summer of 2020, Father John faithfully served as Pastor of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, where he became a spiritual anchor for the community. His leadership was marked by wisdom, kindness, and a deep reverence for the sacred traditions of the Church.

Parishioners remember him as a spiritual guide and source of inspiration—someone who listened with empathy, preached with conviction, and ministered with a heart full of compassion. His presence brought comfort, strength, and reassurance, especially during challenging times.

A Shepherd Who Lived the Faith He Proclaimed

Father John’s life was a reflection of the faith he so faithfully proclaimed. He believed deeply in the hope of the Resurrection and the promise of eternal life, truths that shaped his ministry and sustained those he served. His words and actions consistently pointed others toward God’s mercy, grace, and enduring love.

As the community mourns his loss, there is also gratitude—for the gift of his life, his priesthood, and his faithful service to the Church. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched through his ministry.

United in Prayer and Hope

During this time of sorrow, prayers are requested for Father John, his family, and all who loved him. The Church finds comfort in the hope he preached so faithfully—that death is not the end, but a passage into eternal life with the Lord he served so devotedly.

“Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.”

May Very Rev. John T. Howren, V.F. rest in eternal peace. His faithful service, gentle spirit, and enduring witness to Christ’s love will never be forgotten.
