Brother Jude (William) Such, a monk of Marmion Abbey, died at Edwards Hospital in Naperville on Jan. 11, 2017.Brother Jude was born in Chicago on Feb. 10, 1938. He was educated at St. Thomas the Apostle Elementary School in Chicago and graduated from Mount Carmel High School in 1956.He was a part-time student at Loyola University in Chicago from 1957-1963. Brother Jude taught in Catholic grade schools of Chicago and subsequently worked for a number of years for Illinois Gov. Richard Ogilvie and U.S. Sen. Charles Percy in an administrative capacity.He also was employed by Cook County Hospital and the Illinois Department of Corrections.Brother Jude entered Marmion Abbey in July of 1978. He professed temporary vows on Aug. 6, 1979, and solemn vows on Aug. 6, 1982.Brother Jude served the Abbey and Marmion Academy as an assistant to the treasurer in his years after profession.He was appointed to the position of prefect of resident students at the academy in 1982.In succeeding years, Brother Jude began teaching social science and theology at the academy, in the process receiving a bachelor of arts degree from Illinois Benedictine College and a masterÆs degree in theology from St. Meinrad School of Theology.Brother Jude also served the academy as a bus driver and club moderator.In addition, he assisted the Abbey community for interim periods as a master of ceremonies, secretary to the abbey chapter, and director of oblates.Brother Jude stepped down from teaching duties in 2008. A diabetic condition and a number of other health problems led to deterioration in health and restrictions on his work.The diagnosis of congestive heart failure and other declining health indicators resulted in the decision to have Brother Jude be transferred to St. Patrick Residence in Naperville in September 2016.Brother Jude is survived by a sister, Patricia Gunaka, and the members of his monastic community.
