Charles (Chuck) A. Stevens, 78, of Teutopolis, passed away at 12:17 p.m. Dec. 11, 2012, at his home, surrounded by his family, after a long battle with cancer.A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Teutopolis, with burial following in St. Francis Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled for 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday with a wake service immediately following at the church, Teutopolis. Services are in care of Hall Funeral Chapel in Effingham. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Father Paul Habing or Catholic Charities. Condolences may be left online at http://www.hallfuneralchapel.com/.Charles was born Aug. 17, 1934, in Maywood, the son of Charles and Helen (Lappe) Stevens. He attended both Franciscan and Benedictine seminaries before graduating from St. Phillip High School in Chicago. Charles attended DePaul University and served in the U.S. Air Force.Charles married Martha (Habing) Stevens on June 15, 1957. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Teutopolis. He founded Stevens Industries in 1956, and remained as president until 1998. The Stevens family extends heartfelt gratitude to the past and present employees for their loyalty and dedication over the years.Charles is survived by his wife, Martha of Teutopolis; son, Tim of Teutopolis; son, Kevin of Effingham; son, Tony (Cindy) of Teutopolis; daughter Lisa (Larry) Heisler of Columbia, S.C.; daughter Nancy (Donald) Martin of Chesterfield, Mo.; son, Jonathan of Chicago; daughter, Laura (Troy) Hardiek of Effingham; daughter-in-law, Brenda Stevens of Teutopolis; two sisters, Delores Bailey of Elmhurst and Audrey Kirby of Virginia Beach, Va. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.Charles was preceded in death by his father, Charles; mother, Helen; sister, Peggy Stevens; mother-in-law, Betty Habing; and father-in-law, John Habing.From the Effingham Daily News.
