Nicholas J. “Deacon Nick” Marino, formerly of Sayville, Long Island and Chesapeake, and having most recently resided in Newburgh, N.Y., began his eternal life with our Lord on Friday, July 22, 2011. He had just recently celebrated his 82nd birthday. Son of the late Antonio and Marianna Buttacavoli Marino, he was born June 28, 1929 in Brooklyn, N.Y. He married Nancy Sciacchitano on Sept. 12, 1953 at St. Andrew Avellino Church in Flushing, N.Y. They had 52 wonderful years together before she passed away in 2006. Nicholas earned his master’s degree in foreign languages from Hofstra University and became Professor Emeritus and assistant dean at Suffolk County Community College in Selden, N.Y., until his retirement in 1985. In addition to being a deacon for the Archdiocese of New York and Prince of Peace Catholic Church, Chesapeake he was involved with many organizations including the Sons of Italy and the Modern Languages Association. Nick took all his titles seriously: son, brother, husband, teacher, father, uncle, grandfather, deacon, friend and loved them all. He had a passion for the Lord and his Italian heritage. Cooking was another one of his loves and a cookbook was written detailing the traditions and importance of family and food. He deeply loved his family and friends and will be forever in our hearts. Nicholas is survived by a son, Nicholas J.O. Marino and his wife Kim of Albany, N.Y.; granddaughter, Sara Murphy and her husband Timothy; great-grandson, Timothy J. Murphy III also of Albany; sister-in-law, Theresa Sciacchitano of Chesapeake; a very special niece and nephew, Roseann Cozzupoli and her husband Charles of Newburgh, N.Y.; and a host of nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife Nancy, he was predeceased by his brothers, Sebastian and Anthony Marino; his sister, Margaret Marino and brother-in-law, Salvatore “Sam” Sciacchitano.
