Philip Hulsman, MD, dedicated and loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away at age 72 at Norton’s Audubon Hospital after a brief illness. Dr. Hulsman was born on March 6, 1934, in Indianapolis, IN. Graduating from Bellarmine University in 1957, he earned the degree of Doctor of Medicine from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1961. He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at St. Joseph’s Infirmary in Louisville. An OB/GYN, he served as a Captain in the Army Medical Corps at the time of the Vietnam Conflict. His professional affiliations included the AMA, KMA, American College of OB/ GYN and was a former President of the Louisville OB/ GYN Society. Dr. Hulsman also served as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the U of L School of Medicine and was a past chair of the OB/GYN Department at Audubon Hospital. Community service was a highlight of Dr. Hulsman’s life. He served in a variety of volunteer positions with the AARP, in addition to serving on the Governor’s Commission on Seniors and the Attorney General’s Senior Protection Advisory Council. As an active member of St. Albert the Great Catholic Church, he was a Proclaimer of the Word. He served on the Executive Committee of Kentucky Right to Life Educational Foundation and was the President of the Louisville Serra Club, an organization of Catholic men and women devoted to fostering vocations to the Priesthood and religious life. Dr. Hulsman was active in Republican Party politics, and ran for Kentucky State Representative in 1996. He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Therese Soergel Hulsman; his four children, Ann Quebbeman of Ballardsville, KY, Paul Hulsman and Stephen Hulsman, both of LaGrange, KY, and David Hulsman of Naperville, IL; along with ten grandchildren. Other survivors include his two brothers, Paul of Louisville, and John of Fredonia, KY.
