Saint Meinrad Class: O 1965

Emil Francis Williams Jr., lovingly known as Sam, went to be with the Lord on Aug. 26, 2026.

Born to Emil “Newt” and Dorothy Williams in Vincennes, he was the oldest of 12 and was naturally a leader with a work ethic like no other. Sam graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1957. After graduating, like many others at his age, he joined the service and proudly served the United States Air Force. While serving his country, he met the love of his life, Virginia Vigil. They were married on May 13, 1961, and blessed with two wonderful sons, settling in Council Grove, Kansas, before moving back to his hometown of Vincennes, Indiana.

Sam, a jack of all trades, had many occupations in his lifetime. He owned and operated Sam’s Sales and Service in Council Grove and Southern Indiana Engine, where he worked on small-engine repairs, and drove a semi-truck for more than six decades, hauling anything from milk to car parts. Sam also mastered the art of growing sweet potatoes, woodworking, and, most recently, making his famous rosaries. He was a devoted member of the St. Francis Xavier Parish, specifically the St. John’s Catholic Church. He also held membership with the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed quality time with his family, hosting the “Williams Christmas party,” fishing at his brother’s pond, bowling with his sons and friends, and traveling with his wife. Sam touched many lives with his love for people, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Sam is preceded in death by his parents, Newt and Dorothy Williams; eldest son, Mike Williams; siblings, Helen (Bob) Hoffman, Paul Mike Williams, John (Diane) Williams, Dave Williams; brother-in-law, Tim Macklin; and sister-in-law, Vicki Williams.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Gini Williams; son, Nick Williams; daughter-in-law, Jan Williams; grandchildren, Dr. Megan (Daniel) Brames, Emily (Danny) Bushnell, Dr. Nate (Annie) Williams, Gretchen (Logan) Hamilton, Dallas (Katie) Williams, Austin (Gabby) Williams; great-grandchildren, Bella, Millie, Finley, Silas, Jamie, Pippa, Owen, Oliver, Ethan, Elena, Marron, Dougie, Avery, Arizona; siblings, Sister Mary Francis, Jim (Linda) Williams, Lawrence Williams, Bill (Shirley) Williams, Mary Ann (Wayne) Traylor, Sally (Tim) Macklin; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
