A Fairfield resident, Reverend Albert James “Fr. Al” Hartlage, Jr. age 85, passed away Monday, June 6, 2016 at his residence. He was born July 14, 1930 in Louisville to Albert James and Loraine Schick Hartlage Sr. Father Al attended St. Denis Parish where he was baptized, attended high school at St. Mary’s, attended St. Meinrad Seminary, and was ordained into the priesthood May 26, 1956. Father Al was an Associate Pastor at St. Columba from 1956-1967, was a Chaplain in the United States Army from 1967-1987 where he served two tours in Vietnam, and retired as a Lt Colonel. He served as Chaplain for Frazier Rehab, Kosair Children’s Hospital, St. Joseph Children’s Home Rectory from 1987-1989, and St. Mary and Elizabeth Hospital from 1989-1993. Father Al was the Associate Pastor at St. Stephen Martyr from 1993-1996. From 1996-2000 he served as Associate Pastor of St. Michael in Fairfield and All Saints in Taylorsville. Father Al was retired in residence at St. Michael from 2000 to present.He was preceded in death by his mother, Loraine Schick, his father and step-mother, Albert James and Klarer Stuber Hartlage Sr., and a brother, Carl Hartlage.He is survived by his 6 brothers, Bert (Mary Jane) Hartlage, Delphin (Ethel) Hartlage and Earl (Donna) Hartlage, of Louisville, Floyd (Shirley) Hartlage of Goshen, KY, and Gerard (Alejandra) Hartlage and Michael Hartlage, also of Louisville; his aunt, Anita Paulin of Louisville, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.A Mass of Christian burial for Reverend Albert James “Fr. Al” Hartlage will be celebrated Friday, June 10, 2016 at 11:00 am at St. Michael Catholic Church in Fairfield. Most Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D., Archbishop of Louisville will celebrate. Interment will be in St. Michael Church Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 3:00-8:00 pm at Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home, 1475 New Shepherdsville Road, Bardstown. A prayer service will be held Thursday evening at the funeral home. Additional visitation will be Friday at. St. Michael Catholic Church from 10:00 am until time of services.
