Fr. Andrew J. Wahmhoff, O.S.B., 77, a Benedictine monk of Marmion Abbey, Aurora, died peacefully in the Lord on Good Friday at Provena McAuley Manor. Father Andrew was the second of 12 children born to Carl Wahmhoff and Mildred (nee Hessling). He is survived by the members of his monastic community; his brothers and sisters and their spouses; as well as many nieces and nephews. Father Andrew was born Dec. 19, 1931, and was baptized with the name of John at St. Margaret Church, Otsego, MI. He followed his older brother to Saint Meinrad Minor seminary in 1946. He professed vows as a monk of Marmion Abbey on Aug. 10, 1953, taking the name of Andrew. Father Andrew was ordained to the priesthood on May 3, 1958. The list of jobs that Father faithfully and skillfully fulfilled for the Abbey and Academy communities over the years is endless. He is best remembered as a Latin master teacher of State champions for over 47 years, a dormitory prefect and commandant of cadets, the “red farmer” of Christmas trees, a bus driver, a grass cutter and player of golf, baseball, hockey, tennis, handball and any other game that he could try. But his brother monks best remember his as a man of prayer, principles and deep devotion and service to his Marmion community. Information obtained from the Chicago Suburb Daily Herald on 4/13/2009.
