Father Bede Stocker, O.S.B., age 94, a Benedictine monk of Marmion Abbey in Aurora, died peacefully in the Lord at the Abbey on Tuesday, July 13, 2010. Father Bede was one of 8 children born to Francis Xavier Stocker and Christina Bauerle.He is survived by the members of his monastic community and many nieces and nephews survive him.Father Bede was born on February 18, 1916, and was baptized by the name of Otto at St. Boniface Church, Evansville, IN. He entered St. Meinrad Abbey in 1936 and professed his first vows there on August 6, 1937, taking the name of Bede. Father Bede was ordained to the priesthood on May 26, 1942 in the St. Meinrad Abbey Church in St. Meinrad, Ind. In 1947, he transferred his vows to the new Marmion Abbey, becoming a founding member.Father’s body will be received by his monastic community at Marmion Abbey at 4 p.m. Friday, July 16. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. on July 16, 2010, and from 8:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. on July 17, 2010 before the funeral mass.The funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 17, 2010 in the Abbey Church of St. Augustine of Canterbury.
