Rev. Donald L. Schmidlin 78. He was born October 24, 1930 in Indianapolis to Alphonse and Rosalyn (Rettich) Schmidlin. He attended St. Therese of the Infant Jesus grade school in Indianapolis. He attended Saint Meinrad Minor Seminary and College, Catholic University of America’s Theological College and Loyola University in Chicago. He was ordained by Archbishop Schulte at Saint Meinrad on May 3, 1957. For over 50 years, Fr. Schmidlin faithfully served the Lord and the local Catholic community as pastor of St. Patrick’s of Indianapolis, St. Mary’s of Indianapolis, St. Mary’s of Rushville, IN, St. Joan of Arc of Indianapolis, Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ of Indianapolis and St. Matthew of Indianapolis. Fr. Schmidlin had also served as assistant pastor of Christ the King of Indianapolis, Holy Angels of Indianapolis, and as administrator pro tem, Holy Rosary, Seelyville and St. Augustine Mission, Fontanet.Following his retirement in 2007, he would assist as a sacramental minister at St. Andrew the Apostle in Indianapolis. For many years, Fr. Schmidlin served as the coordinator and director of Catholic Charities in Indianapolis. He was a revered spiritual director and retreat master at Fatima Retreat House. He is survived by his sisters, Rosalyn V. Quill and Sr. Mary V. Schmidlin, OSF; brothers, Paul A. Schmidlin, Ledger J. “Joe” (Donna) Schmidlin and Edward D. (Barbara) Schmidlin as well as 14 nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and nephews.
