Rev. Elmer J. Burwinkel of Indianapolis died February 18, 2014. He was born August 28, 1920 in Dry Ridge, OH, the son of the late Henry and Ottillia Wilhelm Burwinkel. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Benkert Burwinkel; his brothers, Anthony, Eugene, Walter and Henry and is survived by his children, Bob (Patti), Bill (Beth), Mary Jo (Clyde) Kimble, Larry (Peggy), Mark, Jim, Judy (Ken) Strzelecki; grandchildren, Scott, Jasen, Tony, Mary Burwinkel, Elizabeth, Emily, and Elaine Strzelecki; great grandson, Jasen; and many nieces and nephews. Elmer taught school in Cincinnati for 30 years, retiring in 1977. His wife died in 1980, in 1984 he was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and served in many parishes until his retirement in 2006. Rev. Burwinkel had been residing at St. Paul Hermitage. Visitation will be Monday, February 24, 2014 from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. immediately followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Paul Hermitage, 501 N. 17th Ave., Beech Grove, IN 46107. A graveside committal service will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Monday at St. Patrick Cemetery in Madison, IN. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul Hermitage.
