Father Smith, 85, of Louisville and formerly of Nelson County, KY, died at Jewish Hospital in Louisville. He was born June 5, 1925 in Nelson County, KY and ordained a Priest on June 3, 1950 at the Cathedral of the Assumption.Early education was at St. Mary’s Academy in Deer Lodge, MT and Sutherland School near Bardstown. He attended high school at McMichael Intermediate, Detroit, MI, Holy Cross High School, Holy Cross and St. Mary’s College, St. Mary, KY where he received four years of college education. He then studied theology four years at Saint Meinrad Seminary, St. Meinrad, IN. His first parish was Holy Family in Louisville. Other Parishes include Church of Our Lady, Our Mother of Sorrows, St. Augustine, St. Martin, St. Martha and Christ the King Church’s, all of Louisville. He also served at St. Bernard in Casey County and Our Lady of Fatima and Our Lady of the Hills in Taylor County. He was preceded in death by his father, Emmett Vincent Smith; mother, Minnie Hicks Smith Cissell; stepfather, Fea Cissell; three brothers, Clyde Smith, Lyman Smith and Check Cissell; four sisters, Rita Smith Delaney, Bronia Cissell Mattingly, Lillian Cissell Bickett and Juanita Cissell Hagan. Survivors include six sisters, Sister Marie Smith SCN of Nazareth, KY, Louise Simpson of Cox’s Creek, KY, Luenette Newton of Louisville, Theresa Ayers of Miami, FL, Margie Collinsworth of Columbus, OH and Jo Anne Ball of Fort Myers, FL; four brothers, Bob Smith of Champaign, IL, Donald, Ronald and John Ernest Cissell, all of Bardstown, KY; and many nieces and nephews.
