Father John J. Butler, 88, died on Tuesday, June 7, 2016, at Sacred Heart Home in Louisville. A native of Louisville, he graduated from Christ the King parish school in 1942. He attended high school and college at St. Mary’s Seminary College, St. Mary’s, KY, graduating in 1950. Continuing his seminary formation at St. Meinrad, St. Meinrad, IN, he was ordained to the priesthood in 1954 at the Cathedral of the Assumption by Archbishop John A. Floersh and celebrated his first Mass at Christ the King Church. Father Butler held a B.A. degree from St. Mary’s Seminary College and M.A. degrees in Education and English from Xavier University, Cincinnati, OH.Fr. Butler taught for 43 years before retiring at the age of 70 in 1997. His teaching ministry included St. Thomas Seminary, Trinity High School and Sacred Heart Academy. In 1970, while teaching at Trinity High School and then Sacred Heart Academy, he moved to the Ursuline Campus where he assumed the duties of chaplain for the Ursuline Motherhouse for nearly 42 years. He officially retired as the Ursuline Motherhouse chaplain in 2012.He is survived by his brother, William Butler of San Fernando, CA, and numerous nieces and nephews.Visitation will be at the Ursuline Motherhouse, 3115 Lexington Road, on Monday, June 13, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 14, at 11 a.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel with burial in Calvary Cemetery.
