Fr. John J. Jack” Kinkopf, 90, of Kirtland, passed away Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, at Hospice House of the Western Reserve in Cleveland, after having received the prayerful support and consolation of the Sacraments. Born April 6, 1923, in Cleveland, to the late John J. and Gladys C. (White), he had been a resident of Lake County for many years. He was educated at Our Lady of Peace in Cleveland, Cathedral Latin High School, Oberlin College, Saint Meinrad Minor Seminary in Indiana, and St. Mary Seminary in Cleveland. On May 18, 1957, in the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, Archbishop Edward F. Hoban ordained him to the priesthood for the service of the Diocese of Cleveland. Fr. Kinkopf’s first assignment was as Parochial Vicar of St. Francis in Cleveland. On June 14, 1962, he was appointed Chaplain of Huron Road Hospital and residence at St. Philomena in East Cleveland. Fr. Kinkopf was transferred March 31, 1973, to serve as Parochial Vicar of St. Justin Martyr in Eastlake, and was transferred and appointed Parochial Vicar of St. Anselm in Chester Township June 27, 1974. Fr. Kinkopf was appointed Vicar Coadjutor of St. Joan of Arc in Chagrin Falls May 1, 1978, and was appointed Pastor of St. Joan of Arc in Chagrin Falls June 10, 1981. On Sept. 1, 1988, Fr. Kinkopf was assigned as Senior Parochial Vicar of St. Joan of Arc in Chagrin Falls, where he served until his retirement April 5, 1991. He was the cherished brother of Mary Ann (nee Kinkopf) Cahill; uncle of Jay J. (Jan) Cahill, Terry (Jeffrey) Mills, Timothy A. (Suzanne) Cahill, Thomas M. (Patty) Cahill and Michael F. (Laura) Cahill; great-uncle; and great-great-uncle of many. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, John J. and Gladys C. (nee White) Kinkopf; and brother-in-law, John J. Cahill, M.D. Vespers will be celebrated by The Most Reverend Richard G. Lennon, Bishop of Cleveland 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, at Divine Word Church, 8100 Eagle Road, Kirtland. The visitation will continue following the Vespers until 8 p.m. Thursday at the church. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 4, at Divine Word Church. The Most Reverend Roger W. Gries, O.S.B., Auxiliary Bishop of Cleveland will be the main celebrant and Fr. Donald Snyder will be the homilist. Interment will be in All Souls Cemetery in Chardon Township.
