He was a graduate of Male High School, as well as St. Mary’s College and Saint Meinrad Seminary. John was ordained to the priesthood on June 11, 1960. During his years with the Archdiocese of Louisville, he served as the Associate Pastor for Holy Family, Our Mother of Sorrows and St. Elizabeth of Hungary. He served as Pastor for St. Philip Neri, St. Bartholomew, and St. Michael in Fairfield, KY. He also served as the Archdiocesan Accountant from 1967 to 1982 and was the Archdiocesan Scout Chaplain. John was preceded in death by his parents, John George and Elizabeth Veronica (Stemle) Magel; and niece, Patricia C. Gerrits. He is survived by his sisters, Virginia Chesnut (Harold) and Dorothy Link (J.F. Jr.); nephews, Robert Chesnut (Cindy), Thomas Chesnut, John F. Link III (Sharon), and Richard A. Link; nieces, Donna Ray (Garry), Diana S. Link, and Carol Oberhausen (Danny); as well as many great- and great-great-nephews and nieces. Father John’s funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m., Thursday, April 19, 2012 at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, 2042 Buechel Bank Road, with interment to follow in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 – 8 p.m., Wednesday at Ratterman & Sons Funeral Home, 3800 Bardstown Road, and 9 – 11 a.m. Thursday, prior to Mass, at St. Bartholomew.
