Reverend John P. O’Brien 69, retired Pastor of St. Bridget’s Church, Liberty and former Associate Pastor of St. Gabriel Church, Connersville at his residence in Connnersville. Born September 2, 1937 in Indianapolis, IN, he was one of two sons of Timothy J. and Margaret Doherty O’Brien. A Catholic priest for 42 years, he was a 1956 graduate of Saint Meinrad High School and a 1960 graduate of Saint Meinrad College. In 1964, he graduated from the Saint Meinrad School of Theology with a Master of Divinity and Bachelor of Arts Degree. During his ministry he had served at several parishes, shcools and a hospital throughout Indiana, either as Pastor, Associate Pastor, Instructor or Chaplain. Most recently, he had served as the Associate Pastor at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Connersville from 1994 until 1996. In 1996 he became the Pastor at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Liberty, where he served until his retirement due to ill health in 2006. He was a member of and served as chaplain for both Council #861, Knights of Columbus and Father Peter’s Assembly 4th Degree, Knights of Columbus. He was an avid Notre Dame fan and attended many football games in South Bend. He enjoyed drawing, woodworking and making crosses, which he gave to many people. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Timothy O’Brien.
