The Reverend John Cornelius Scherbno, 87, was born in Sunrise, Wyoming on September 17, 1922, to Charles and Grace Sherbno. He died at Parkside Villas, Middleburg Heights, OH. Fr. Sherbno was a graduate of Scott High School and attended the former DeSales College, Toledo and received an A.B. in Philosophy at Saint Meinrad College, Indiana. He received a Masters of Divinity degree from Mt. St. Mary’s Seminary, Norwood, Ohio. He was ordained at Rosary Cathedral, Toledo, OH, May 26, 1949 by Bishop Karl J. Alter. His Canonical Appointments were Toledo SS. Peter & Paul, Toledo Blessed Sacrament, Toledo Rosary Cathedral, Defiance St. Mary, Toledo St. Francis de Sales Crestline St. Joseph , Instructor Mary Manse College, Toledo, Wakeman St. Mary, Marygrove Immaculate Conception, New London Our Lady of Lourdes, Put-in-Bay Mother of Sorrows/Kelleys Island St. Michael. He published “A Handbook of Papal Statements on Economic Society” in 1949 and “True Tales of Three Steers,” a philosophical fairy tale in 1972. A life-long interest in flying began when he saw Lindberg’s Spirit of St. Louis in 1927 as it flew over Toledo. He received a private pilot’s license in 1980 and flew his own Piper Tri-Pacer aircraft for inter-parish, inter-island, and island-mainland travel while Pastor of the Lake Erie Island Parishes. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree, Aircraft and Owners Pilots Association, National Association of Priest Pilots An avid golfer, Father achieved 2 holes-in-one at Saunder’s Golf course, Put-in-Bay, Ohio. Father Sherbno was preceded in death by his parents, Charles T. Sherbno and Grace Atkinson Sherbno and brother, Charles (Patricia). He is survived by a sister, Patricia Eisinger of Toledo, nieces and nephews. Memorials may take the form of a contribution to the Diocesan Priest’s Retirement Fund.
