Fr. Peter Hsu, 85, died at 8:08 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016, in Herrin Hospital.He was born Dec. 15, 1931, in Jianyun, China to John and Mary (Mei) Hsu.He studied for seven years at St. Meinard Seminary to become a priest. Father Peter Hsu was ordained June 9, 1957, in Techny, for the diocese of Naking, China.His connection with the Belleville diocese began when he lived at the former St. Martin of Tours Parish in Washington Park while attending St. Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri. He graduated from St. Louis University with a MasterÆs Degree in Theology.In 1978, unable to return to his own country, he was officially incardinated into the Belleville diocese.Father HsuÆs ministry in the Belleville diocese included associate pastorates at Holy Rosary Parish in Fairmont City and St. AndrewÆs in Murphysboro; hospital chaplaincies at St. JosephÆs Hospital in Murphysboro and the former St. ClementÆs in Red Bud; parish administrator at the Sesser and Tamaroa parishes; and pastorates at St. MaryÆs in Anna, St. JosephÆs in Prairie du Rocher, St. Aloysius in Royalton, and Sacred Heart in Zeigler.He retired from active ministry in 1999. He was the pastor of the Royalton/Zeigler parish for 17 years.He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three sisters.Surviving relatives include his niece, Han Dong-Yu of China and his great-niece, Han Liu of China.
