Father Vincent, a native of St. Louis, was born May 29, 1918, the son of Richard and Ann Cosgrove O’Shaughnessy, in a family of four boys and 8 girls. After grade school with the Sisters of St. Joseph and three years in the Prep Seminary, he enrolled at South Side Catholic High. After graduation, with several of his classmates, he left for the novitiate at Maryhurst, being professed August 15, 1937. He graduated with a BS in Education (English) from the University of Dayton in 1940. His first assignment was to Detroit Holy Redeemer, then Saint Meinrad Seminary, staying on for a Master in Divinity degree. He was ordained May 27, 1947, In 1948 he began his teaching/ chaplaincy career, which was to find him involved in an extraordinarily large number of changes. He was sent to Chaminade for three years, where he would return three more times (1959-60, 61-64, 73-75). He next went to McBride, where the school paper named him faculty member of the year in 1955. Short stints followed, at Maryhurst (1956-58) and East St. Louis before being sent to his alma mater, now St. Mary’s, in 1960. In 1961 it was back to Chaminade. He is survived by his sister-in-law Frances (Jack) O’Shaughnessy; dozens of loving nieces, nephews and cousins, thousands of grateful former students and his Marianist Brothers. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Father Richard O’Shaughnessy Marianist Scholarship Fund to benefit students at St. Mary’s High School are deeply appreciated.
