Francis Joseph “Pat” Mellen, 97, of Henderson, KY, died peacefully at the Nazareth Home on Monday, February 27, 2012. He was born September 21, 1914 in Indianapolis. In high school, he acquired the nickname “Pat,” by which he has been universally known since. He married Mary Emma Oberst on June 22, 1940 in Owensboro. They claimed never to have had a serious argument in 71 years of marriage. He is survived by his wife; six children, John Mellen (Michelle) of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, Ann Kowalski (Jim) of Narragansett, RI; Frank Mellen (Beverly Glascock) of Louisville; Margaret Gruetzemacher of Springfield, MO; Patricia Mellen of Alexandria, VA; Neil Mellen (Mavin Martin) of Louisville; ten grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 3, 2012 at St. Agnes Church in Louisville. A memorial service will be held in Henderson at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Ratterman Funeral Home, 3711 is caring for arrangements.From the Courier-Journal.
