George E. Scheitlin, 77, of North Wood Lake Drive, Columbus, Ind., died at Clarion Select in Indianapolis.George worked at Arvin Industries in Columbus for 34 years before retiring in 1992 as vice president of Advanced Design and Engineering. George, an automotive emissions engineer, holds patents on many innovative safety and exhaust emission designs such as the first day/night mirror, remote-control side-view mirrors, catalytic converters and exhaust gas manifolds. He developed, designed and operated the Arvin Tech Center in Walesboro, Ind.A Navy veteran, he served on the destroyer USS Remy DD 688 during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church. A loving husband, a father of six, a grandfather of 23 and a great-grandfather of one, he enjoyed spending time with his family, playing golf, fishing, hunting and was an avid fan of boxing.Born May 22, 1930, in Evansville, he was the son of George M. and Lenora Fehn Scheitlin. He married Geri (Germaine) Zakrzewski on June 12, 1954, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Chicago, graduated from Evansville College in 1955 and moved to Columbus in 1957.Survivors include is wife; children, Gary (Amanda) Scheitlin of Fort Wayne, Ind., Gregory (Chris) Scheitlin of Dallas, Gordon (Karen) Scheitlin of Cincinnati, Geoffrey (Cindy) Scheitlin of South Barrington, Ill., Geralyn Chabucos of Atlanta and Gerard (Connie) Scheitlin of Franklin, Tenn.; 23 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; a brother, Thomas (Ann) Scheitlin of Evansville; a sister, Mary Crabb of Evansville; and several nieces and nephews.Mr. Scheitlin was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Scheitlin.In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to St. Bartholomew School Scholarship Fund, 1306 27th St., Columbus, IN 47201; the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society; or the charity of your choice.Information obtained from the Evansville Courier & Press online, www.courierpress.com, on 7/13/07.
