Albert “Jack” James Diehl, 73, of Evansville, passed away on March 3, 2017, at Charlier Hospice Center.Jack was born in Evansville, to Albert and Mary (Hooper) Diehl on May 7, 1943.He attended St. Theresa Catholic School, St. Meinrad (high school and two years of college), and graduated from the Evansville College (University of Evansville). He retired from Whirlpool after 32 years where he worked as an international buyer, and later worked as a school bus driver with the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation for five years. He was a long-time parishioner at St. Theresa Catholic Church where he served on the parish council, was active in the men’s club, served at funeral masses, and worked at the summer social where he, family and friends ran the hamburger/fish booth (The Best Diehl in Town) for 30 years. He (and his wife, Pam) were inducted into the Brute Society, an honorary society of lay persons for models of Christian stewardship in 2013. He also served in the National Guard for four years.Jack was a loving husband, father, grandpa, brother and friend. He enjoyed golfing, boating, horse racing especially the Kentucky Derby, going to the Indianapolis 500 (40+ years), traveling with family and friends, helping anyone he could, and most of all, spending time with his family. St Meinrad had a special place in his heart and he truly loved his visits to the campus. Jack will always be remembered as a kind and compassionate person who never met someone he didn’t call friend. He loved his life, remained positive, had an amazing personality, and brought joy to everyone who knew him.Jack is survived by his wife of 49 golden years, Pam (Alford); and three children, Julie (Marty) Mattingly, Dan (Erin) Diehl and Matt (Kari) Diehl; grandchildren, Mitchell and Jack Mattingly and Greta Diehl; father-in-law, Bill (Alford); sister, Shirley (Ray) Ubelhor; brothers, Tom (Kathy) Diehl and Rick (Teresa) Diehl; brothers-in-law, Bill (Jackie) Alford, Jerry (Phyllis) Alford and Ron (Betty) Alford; aunt, Mary Hooper; many nieces, nephews and cousins.Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Mary Diehl; mother-in-law, Jeanette Alford; and niece, Christine Alford.The family would like to thank Father Ted Tempel and Sister Jennifer Miller for their long-time friendship, support and guidance. We also thank Dr. Thomas Waits, Dr. Michael Miller and staff at Oncology Hematology Associates and Charlier Hospice Center for their compassion and care.
