John (Jack) Leo Farmerie, 85, went to be with the Lord on July 23, 2026, with his wife, Carolyn, and three sons, Steve, Randy, and Scott by his side.
Jack grew up near Pittsburgh, PA, and as a child walked to Forbes field and attended many Pittsburgh Pirates games. His first love was for Pittsburgh sports teams.
He attended Saint Meinrad Seminary in Indiana where he studied for the Priesthood and participated in soccer. His goal was to become a Catholic priest but he decided to pursue other options and ended up joining the Army reserves in 1964. He was told he was going to San Antonio Texas by the army but ultimately he was assigned to Ft Meade in Baltimore. He was in the right place to meet his wife Carolyn . They met at a nightclub in Georgetown in Washington, DC and 57 yrs later celebrated a special wedding anniversary. They started their family in College Park, MD and after the three sons arrived, moved to Burke, VA where they’ve lived since 1978.
Jack spent 36 years working for the Federal government as part of the Defense Department. He worked first at Cameron Station and then finished his career at the Pentagon. He was there on 9/11 when the plane hit the building. He was Deputy for Policy Automation under the Secretary of Defense. He helped facilitate the transfer of US technology to foreign countries and oversaw a 28 million dollar budget. The government sent him to the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University where he earned a Masters Degree graduating with a straight A average.
Jack was full of energy and spirit. He loved people and could make a stranger feel like a friend. He loved his family and was always there for all. He also took care of himself. He ate healthy and regularly exercised. Just a few months ago he was still jogging for a mile 3x a week.
John is survived by his wife, Carolyn Wise Farmerie, his three sons, Stephen Leo Farmerie, John Randolph Farmerie, and Scott Benjamin Farmerie. His daughter-n-laws Julie High Farmerie, and Vickie Rae Marshall, and his grandchildren Ashleigh Farmerie, Ben Farmerie, Ryan Farmerie, Sarah Farmerie, Brandon Farmerie, Luke Farmerie, and Daniel Farmerie. Survivors also include his bother-n-law Ken Lucas, nephews John and Frank Porter and a large extended family. He was preceded in death by his sister Carol Farmerie Lucas, his mother Helen Rihn Farmerie, and his father John(Jack) George Farmerie.
