John Robert Engbers, 86, of Margate, FL, passed away August 9, 2024.

John was born to Clarence John Engbers and Mary Catherine Engbers, on June 12, 1938 in Evansville, Indiana. After 8th grade, he went to the Saint Meinrad Seninary and School of Theology in Saint Meinrad, Indiana. Shortly after high school, he joined the Army. He was in the Army for 3 years, where he was in Army Intelligence stationed in Germany. He received a Masters Degree in English Literature from Florida Atlantic University. He had several jobs earlier in life, such as a Teacher and a Banker, but he became a Counselor for New York State Department of Corrections. He worked there for 25 years and was ultimately promoted to Supervisor.  A position he held until his retirement in December 1999.

He had a special love for trains and trolleys. He belonged to the Deerfield Train Club at the time of his passing. He also loved dogs and after his retirement volunteered at his local animal shelter in New York State. When he moved to Florida full time he also volunteered at NW Medical Center in Margate, FL.  He volunteered for Respect for Life, both in New York and Florida.  He was a staunch Conservative and a practicing Catholic. When his health became too bad, he would watch church services on TV.

He is survived by his sister, Mary Ann Wilson, nephew, Gregory A. Buntz (Pamela Persaud Buntz), niece, Catherine A DeDi (Scott H. DeDi Jr.), niece, Laura Wilson, nephew, Ed Wilson Jr. (Sandra Wilson), and niece, Lisa Benitez (Marcos Benitez).

He was preceded in death by Clarence J. Engbers, father, Mary Catherine Engbers, mother, and Reverend Thomas J. Engbers, brother.
