Monsignor Angelo Joseph Lombardo, 78, died in Rosewood Care Center in Swansea. He was longtime head of the Sacred Heart parish in Du Quoin.Monsignor was born Nov. 21, 1928, in St. Louis and graduated from St. Matthew Grade School in St. Louis. His high school studies were at Cathedral Latin School for two years and St. Louis Preparatory Seminary for one year, all in the Archdiocese of St. Louis. He finished his high school and college course at St. Henry’s Seminary in Belleville and his theology studies at Saint Meinrad Seminary.His assignments as parochial vicar were at St. Andrew Parish in Murphysboro from May 26, 1955, to Aug. 24, 1961, and St. Mary Parish in Mount Carmel from Aug. 24, 1961 to March 5, 1962. He served as pastor of St. Andrew, Christopher and the mission of St. Mary in Sesser from March 5, 1962 to July 3, 1974; Sacred Heart Parish in Du Quoin from July 3, 1974, to June 11, 1985; and St. Barbara Parish in Okawville from July 1985, to July 1999. He was made a Monsignor on Feb. 25, 1976, appointed Vicar General on Nov. 4, 1977, became a Consultor on Dec. 12, 1977, and retired as Vicar General on Jan. 1992. After retirement, he served numerous parishes on weekends.He was preceded in death by his parents, Angelo Joseph and Josephine (Giraffa) Lombardo and a brother, Charles Lombardo, on April 1, 1961. Father Lombardo donated his body to St. Louis University School of Medicine.Published in the Du Quoin Evening Call on 11/8/07.
