Msgr. Jerome Denis Hartlein, 80, of Mascoutah, IL, born Feb. 18, 1933 in East St. Louis, IL, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Belleville, IL.Msgr. Hartlein was ordained May 27, 1958 by the Most Reverend Albert R. Zuroweste. He was associate pastor at St. Albert the Great in Fairview Heights; taught at the Cathedral High School while residing at St. Mary Catholic Church in Belleville where he was associate pastor; was pastor at St. Mary’s in Mound City, St. Catherine’s in Grand Chain and Our Lady of Fatima in Ullin, IL; he has been the pastor of Holy Childhood of Jesus Catholic Church since 1972; and was named Monsignor in May of 2000. He served as a Diocesan Consulter; served on the Diocesan Building Commission, and the Clergymen’s Society; and was very active for many years in the American Red Cross blood drive, and the Mascoutah Ministerial Alliance.Msgr. Hartlein was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin Peter and Marie Stella, nee Fiedler, Hartlein; a brother, James who died at childbirth; sister-in-law, Nell Hartlein; a nephew, David; and a favorite uncle, Pete.He is survived by two brothers, Edwin John Hartlein of Des Moines, IA, and Francis Leonard (Jeanette) Hartlein of Maryville, IL; nieces and nephews.In lieu of all other gifts, memorials may be made to Holy Childhood Memorial Improvement Fund, P. Hartlein’s body will be received in the Holy Childhood of Jesus Catholic Church, Mascoutah, IL at 2 PM Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013 accompanied by a prayer service which is open to the public, and will be followed by a wake until 8 PM. The wake continues from 9 to 11 AM on Friday, Dec. 6, 2013 at the church.Funeral: Presiding over the Funeral Liturgy will be the Most Reverend Edward K. Braxton. The Mass of Christian burial will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, December 6, 2013, at Holy Childhood of Jesus Catholic Church in Mascoutah, IL, with Bishop Stanley Schlarman as the Principal Celebrant and with Monsignor William Hitpas as Homilist.
