Patrick Dewayne Shaw, a teacher and vice principal in schools across Little Rock and Washington, D.C., died April 19 at the age of 60.
Born and raised in Little Rock, Patrick graduated from Catholic High School for Boys. Throughout a 38-year career in education, he received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Saint Meinrad Seminary in Indiana and a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of Minnesota in St. Paul. He also earned three master’s degrees: in secondary education and history from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock; in special education from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.; and in school administration from Trinity Washington University.
He began teaching in 1987 at Our Lady of Good Counsel School in Little Rock, later moving to St. Theresa School. In 1990. He relocated to Minnesota, where he continued teaching and worked with the Minnesota AIDS Project in Minneapolis. He returned to Arkansas in 1998 to teach at Mount St. Mary Academy. In 2002, Patrick moved to Washington, D.C., where he continued to teach and serve as vice principal at several local schools. He concluded his career at Mundo Verde Bilingual Public Charter School.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Myrna G. Shaw. He is survived by his father, Thomas H. Shaw; his brother, James Shaw (Michele); his sister, Angela Mahairi (Wafai); and his niece and nephews: Austin, Tariq, Reed, Ramy, and Jasmine.
