Robert L. Long, 72, of Sacramento passed away peacefully at home on November 26. He was the first-born of 13 children to Robert and Loretta Long in Indianapolis, IN, on April 21, 1940. He is preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Vincent (Amy) Long and Richard (Barbara) Long. Robert is survived by his wife, Catherine (Lee Anderson), his daughter Anita (John) Dolliver, his son Chris (Robin) Long, his stepson Brian (Sandra) Taylor. He is also survived by his loving grandchildren, Andrew, Shelby and Zade and his faithful cat companions Bernie and Lillie; brothers and sisters Bill (Sharon) Long, Tom (Carolyn) Long, Mary Ann (Joe) Masner, Larry Long, Greg (Deb) Long, Nick (Theresa) Long, Elise Hopson, Scott (Debbie) Long, Connie (Rob) Gregory, and Ronald (Tammy) Long, and many nieces and nephews; special friends Bud & Natalie Kramer, Susan & Steve Harrington, Bob & Mary Hight, his “brothers” of Saint Meinrad, Betty Russell and the Social Workersat Kaiser Sacramento & Roseville Hospitals. Robert was a graduate of Saint Meinrad Seminary in 1958 and received his master’s degree in Social Work from Indiana University in 1966. After moving to California in 1968, Robert established himself as a prominent Social Worker with several employers over the years including Atascadero State Hospital, Catholic Social Services, California Youth Authority, National University, UC Davis Medical Center, private practice, Dept. of Fish & Game and most recently retired from Kaiser Sacramento Medical Center. Robert’s passion was teaching and mentoring students seeking their licenses in social work through the years. Robert was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, companion and friend. He will be dearly missed. Services will be held on December 19 at 2:30pm at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 3235 Arden Way, Sacramento. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Healing Journeys, SPCA, St. Vincent DePaul, Alzheimer’s Assoc. or charity of choice.Prepared for the Sacramento Bee.
