Mr. Verkamp, 77, died at St. Charles Health Campus in Jasper.He was born in Huntingburg on Dec. 1, 1933, to John H. and Wilhelmina J. (Schipp) Verkamp. He married Carole Reising June 26, 1958 and she died May 1, 1996. He married Charmaine Herr Schneider on June 7, 1997.Surviving are his wife, Charmaine Verkamp; three daughters, Mrs. Edward (Cathy) Fislar and Mary Verkamp, Indianapolis, and Mrs. Carlos (Christine) Lizardi, Clearwater, FL; three sons, Tony Verkamp of Colorado Springs, CO, John Verkamp, Jasper, and Mike Verkamp, Franklin; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Tom (Deborah) Phelps, Lafayette, and Mrs. Jim (Kriste) Braunecker, St. Louis; two sisters, Mrs. Dennis (Virlee Perk”) Kreilein, Jasper, and Sister Mary Ann Verkamp, OSB, Ferdinand; two brothers, Gilbert Verkamp, Jasper, and Bernard Verkamp, Vincennes; 10 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by a sister, Sister Mary Aquin Verkamp, OSB, and a brother, Francis Verkamp.Mr. Verkamp graduated from Huntingburg High School in 1951. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Indiana State University and a master’s degree from Indiana University. He served in the Indiana National Guard. He retired in 1993 after 37 years at Jasper High School teaching industrial arts and driver’s education. He was an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman. He was a member of and Eucharistic minister at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper and served as a reader at Providence Home Health Care Center in Jasper. He was a founding member of the Dubois County Sportsmen’s Club and a member of American Legion Post 147, Indiana Retired Teachers Association and Jasper Deutscherverein.
