In the early hours of Saturday, February 21, 2015, Sister Mary Alan Miller slipped quietly into the presence of the Lord whom she had so generously served. Residing in Sandusky for the past five years, she was involved as a volunteer in multiple ways, some of which were Hospice, visiting the sick, and tutoring children. She came from a warm and loving family in Norwalk, OH. Mary Elizabeth was born on January 13, 1943, to parents, Elmer and Elizabeth Fisher Miller. Her early years were full of life and activity with her brother, Alan and her sister, Rita with whom she attended St. Paul Elementary School. After graduation she moved to Toledo to become an aspirant with the Sisters of Notre Dame. Her high school, Notre Dame Academy, ushered her into the world of academic achievement which she pursued for the rest of her life.Children with special needs became her passion and her specialty for the rest of her career. Her constancy in caring and reaching out to them marked her as a deeply dedicated teacher and mentor for teachers with whom she worked as principal for many years. She was also involved in Religious Education for students with special needs and also for the deaf. She belonged to an RCIA Team and Catholic Identity Committee for local Catholic schools.Sister Mary Alan received her BA degree from Mary Manse College in Toledo and her MEd from Bowling Green State University. She was also certified in Psychology and Counseling and worked with children with learning disabilities as well as minority groups. Sister taught at St. John, Delphos. She was principal at St. Mary, Toledo for two years, and was a teacher for six years at Mary Immaculate School, Toledo, before she became the principal there for thirty-one years. Her parents preceded her in death. Left to mourn her are her brother, Alan and sister, Rita; nieces and nephews.
