William “Bill” Halter, 89, of Lawrenceville, Illinois, passed away on Friday, Oct. 25, 2019 at his residence.
He was born on Jan. 26, 1930 in Vincennes, the son of Louis and Lucy (Wichman) Halter. He married Ruth Primus on July 7, 1951, and she survives. He attended St. Thomas Grade School and St. Meinrad Seminary for two years. He was a graduate of Decker High School. Bill was a lifelong farmer and truck driver. He also worked as a heavy equipment operator with the Local 841. He owned the Drewry’s Beer Distributor in Lawrenceville from 1960 to 1964. He was co-owner of Halter’s Machine Shop from 1975 to 1985 and continued working there after retirement. He drove a truck for Hamilton Glass in Vincennes. He was an owner-operator and leased to Rex N Don located in Mattoon, Illinois. His memberships include the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Lawrenceville, and the Knights of Columbus and Knox County 40&8 of Vincennes. He was also a member of the Elks and the Moose. Bill and Ruth have been dedicated Christians to their church and family. He will be remembered as a loving husband, dad, and grandpa. .
Survivors include his wife, Ruth; nine children, Pat Halter and his wife, Renee, of Lawrenceville, Kathy Cordes and her husband, Steve, of Lawrenceville, Ginny Hovermale and her husband, John, of Lawrenceville, Ruth Ann Myers and her husband, Michael, of Lawrenceville, Kelly Halter and his wife, Ruthie, of Lawrenceville, Tony Halter and his wife, Missy, of Vincennes, Angie Johnson and her husband, Darrin, of San Diego, Paul Halter of Lawrenceville, and Mary Buchanan and her husband, Justin, of Lawrenceville, and Honorary Son, (No. 10) Ernie “Buzzy” Hayes of Lawrenceville; four brothers, Francis “Boob” Halter, Edward “Short” Halter and his wife, Phyllis, Steve Halter and his wife, Marilyn, and George Halter and his wife, Cathy, all of Vincennes; three sisters, Judy Vieke and her husband, Ron of Vincennes, Jane Cupp of Vincennes, and Kay Jones and her husband, Dave, of Elgin, Illinois; grandchildren, Brooke Halter and Blayze Miller, Katie Gher and her husband, Graham, Heidi Barney and her husband, Lance, Zach Lane and his wife, Julia, Josh Hovermale and his wife, Jenn, Lindsey Ochs and her husband, Tyler, Jennifer Pargin and her husband, Troy, Jason Morey and his wife, Barbie, Heather Tramel and her husband, Matt, Brandon Myers, Alex Halter, Madeline Halter, Clare Johnson, Morgan Halter, Wyatt Halter, Kendra Buchanan, Natalie Buchanan, and Owen Buchanan; and great-grandchildren Phoebe York, Vance Miller, Paxton Gher, Jones Gher, Emma Barney, Scarlett Lane, Peyton Decker, Hank Hovermale, Kai Hovermale, Sydney Pargin, Liam Morey and Reid Morey.
Preceding him in death were his parents, a brother, Joe Halter, and two infant brothers
