Contact Info: markhoggard@icchampton.org

Location: Bassette’s Cemetery

Address: 100 Randolph Street, Hampton, VA 23669 (Behind the Hampton Transit Center)

Day of Service: March 14, 2026

Schedule: 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Description of Work: Volunteers will clear grass and brush at Bassette’s Cemetery, an African American Cemetery that hosts graves from the early 1900s, including the burial sites of veterans from World War I to the Vietnam War. Bassette and nearby Elmerton cemeteries include descendants of the many “Contraband” at nearby Fort Monroe: enslaved people who took refuge at Union sites. Please bring any tools that can be used to clear heavy grass and brush, as well as rakes, trowels, edgers, etc. Lawn mowers are also needed, ideally riding mowers.

There is no cost to participate, and each volunteer will receive a free t-shirt (this year in black), courtesy of the Saint Meinrad Alumni Association. Due to production timelines, t-shirts may be distributed to volunteers following the service day. You do not need to be an alumnus of Saint Meinrad to participate. All are welcome.

Volunteers are asked to register by March 7 to ensure an accurate count of volunteers for the site. To register, click “Register Now”, or call the Saint Meinrad Alumni Office at 800-682-0988.
